Starlink for Desert Camping in Kuwait
Why Starlink in the Desert?
Kuwait's camping season (November–March) means weeks in the desert. The problem: 4G coverage in the desert is weak or nonexistent. Starlink solves this — fast satellite internet anywhere.
Real-world uses:
- Live streaming (sports, shows) in the tent
- Video calls with family
- Internet for kids (homework, games)
- Remote work from the desert (yes, it's possible!)
- Social media updates and photo sharing
Roam Plan — Best for Camping
| Details | |
|---|---|
| Price | ~KD 46/month ($150) |
| Hardware | Standard or Mini |
| Mobility | Move locations anytime |
| Speed | 5–50 Mbps (depends on congestion) |
| Pause | You can pause the subscription in summer and resume in winter |
Important note: Roam speeds are lower than Residential because you have lower network priority. But for normal use (streaming, browsing, calls) it's sufficient.
Starlink Mini vs Standard for the Desert
| Mini | Standard | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | 1.1 kg | 4.2 kg |
| Setup | Manual (app-guided) | Automatic (motorized) |
| Power | 30–50W | 75–100W |
| Power source | USB-C (power bank possible) | Wall outlet |
| Best for | Light camping, travel | Fixed camp for days |
For short trips (2–3 days): Mini is much easier — lightweight and runs on a large power bank.
For season camp (weeks): Standard is better — auto-align and higher speeds.
Desert Camping Essentials
Power
- Small generator: Easiest solution — run it 2 hours morning and evening
- Lithium battery (LiFePO4) + solar panel: For a quiet solution
- Large power bank (100Wh+): Enough for Mini for 2–3 hours
Setup
- Place the dish on a raised flat surface (car roof, table)
- Point it at open sky (away from tent and vehicles)
- Open the app and follow alignment
- Wait 2–5 minutes for connection
Sand Protection
- Cover the dish with cloth when not in use
- Clean the lens with a soft cloth if dust accumulates
- Keep the router inside the tent or car
Pausing Subscription in Summer
Important feature: Starlink allows you to pause your Roam subscription and reactivate it. If you only use it for camping (November–March), pause in summer and pay for only 5 months out of 12.
Actual cost = 46 × 5 = KD 230/year (instead of KD 552 full year).
Used Equipment for Camping
You don't necessarily need new equipment. On Luulwa you'll find used Starlink kits at lower prices — ideal for seasonal use.
