Starlink in Kuwait Summer Heat — Protecting Equipment and Performance

The Problem: Kuwait's Extreme Heat

Kuwait's summer is one of the harshest climates in the world:

  • June–September: 45–53°C in the shade
  • Surface temperature: Exceeds 70°C on exposed rooftops
  • Direct sun: 12+ hours daily

The Starlink dish is rated to work up to 50°C. But an exposed Kuwait rooftop in summer can exceed this limit.

What Happens When Temperature Rises

TemperatureBehavior
Below 40°CFully normal operation
40–50°CWorks but speed may dip slightly
Above 50°CThermal Throttling begins — intentionally slows down
Above 60°CMay Thermal Shutdown temporarily

Note: Thermal Shutdown is self-protection — the device cools down and restarts. It doesn't damage the equipment.

Heat Symptoms

  • Slower-than-usual speed
  • Temporary disconnections (especially in the afternoon)
  • "Thermal Throttling" notification in the app
  • Dish feels very hot to touch (this is normal)

1. Shade the Dish

Most important tip. A simple shade above the dish reduces temperature by 10–15°C.

  • Fabric shade at 30+ cm above the dish (don't touch the dish)
  • Metal shade with air gap — better cooling
  • ❌ Don't cover the dish directly — it needs ventilation and sky view

2. Choose Installation Spot Carefully

  • North-facing wall — least direct sun exposure
  • Under roof overhang — natural shade for part of the day
  • Elevated from surface — 50+ cm mount keeps it away from surface heat

3. Reflective Paint (Optional)

Some users paint the metal mounting base with white reflective paint. Reduces heat absorption.

Warning: Don't paint the dish itself — may affect signal and void warranty.

4. Peak Hours

12 PM–4 PM is the worst period. If possible:

  • Run large downloads at night
  • Automatic updates: schedule for dawn

5. Keep Router Indoors

The router doesn't handle heat like the dish. Keep it:

  • Inside the house — air-conditioned
  • In a shaded outdoor box if it must be outside
  • Away from direct sun

6. Clean Dust Regularly

Dust and sand accumulate and impede cooling:

  • Clean the dish once a week in summer
  • Use a soft cloth or air blower
  • Clean router ventilation openings

7. UPS for Outages

Summer power outages + restarts = internet downtime. A small UPS protects the router and provides 15–30 minutes of backup.

No. The design handles high temperatures. Worst cases:

  • Thermal Throttling = temporary slowdown
  • Thermal Shutdown = powers off and restarts

No reports of permanent heat damage in hot climate regions.

What About Sandstorms?

The dish is IP54 (Standard) or IP67 (Mini) — protected from dust and water. During a sandstorm:

  • Won't break the dish — robust design
  • May temporarily reduce signal — sand particles scatter the signal
  • Clean after the storm — remove accumulated sand
