Rooftop Starlink Installation in Kuwait
Why the Rooftop Is the Best Spot
| Location | Advantage | Disadvantage |
|---|---|---|
| Rooftop | Best sky view, no obstructions | Heat, need to go up |
| Balcony | Easy access | Buildings may block |
| Garden | Convenient | Walls and trees block |
| Window | Indoor | Very poor performance (glass blocks) |
The rooftop gives you a 360° sky view — exactly what Starlink needs. Every obstruction = more disconnections.
Before You Start — Starlink App
- Download the Starlink app
- Use the "Check for Obstructions" tool
- Point your phone camera at the sky from the planned location
- The app tells you the obstruction percentage — below 1% = excellent
Tools Needed
- Power drill + concrete bits (for Kuwait's concrete rooftops)
- Mounting bolts — stainless steel (rust-resistant)
- Waterproof sealant — to protect mounting points from rain
- Mounting bracket — from Starlink (Pipe Adapter or Pivot Mount)
- Long Ethernet cable — 25 meters if the router is far
- Cable channel — to route the cable neatly on the wall
Installation Steps
Step 1: Choose the Spot
- Highest point on the roof
- Away from water tank, AC units, and satellite dishes
- North side preferred (least direct sun)
- Make sure the spot supports the weight (light, ~6 kg total)
Step 2: Mount the Base
- Place the base at the chosen spot
- Mark hole positions with a pen
- Drill the holes
- Insert bolts and secure the base
- Important: Apply sealant around each hole to prevent rain leaks
Step 3: Mount the Dish
- Attach the dish to the base (snap-in)
- Make sure it's securely locked
Step 4: Route the Cable
- Run the cable from the dish to inside the house
- Use a cable channel on the wall (cleanest)
- Or route through an existing AC opening (easiest)
- Connect the cable to the router
Step 5: Power On and Setup
- Plug in the router
- Wait 2–5 minutes
- The dish auto-aligns (Standard model)
- Open the app and complete initial setup
Kuwait-Specific Tips
Heat
- Install a shade above the dish (30+ cm height) — reduces temperature by 10–15°C
- Avoid metal surfaces — they heat more than concrete
- Consider an elevated mount (50+ cm) to keep away from surface heat
Dust and Sand
- Choose a spot relatively protected from direct northern winds
- Clean the dish weekly with a soft cloth
- The dish is dust-resistant (IP54) — but cleaning maintains best performance
Safety
- Secure cables with clips — strong winds can pull them
- If possible, add grounding for static electricity protection
- Don't install near the roof edge — safety during maintenance
How Long Does It Take?
| Phase | Time |
|---|---|
| Site check (app) | 5 minutes |
| Mount the base | 20–30 minutes |
| Mount the dish | 5 minutes |
| Route the cable | 15–30 minutes |
| Setup and power on | 5–10 minutes |
| Total | ~60–90 minutes |
Technician vs Self-Install
You usually don't need a technician. Installation is straightforward. But if you:
- Don't have a drill or don't want to drill the roof
- Don't want to go on the roof in the heat
- Want professional cable routing
Local satellite technicians can help. Installation cost is typically KD 15–30.
