What Is a Gold Hallmark?
A hallmark is an official stamp from Egypt's Assay Office (مصلحة الدمغ والموازين), engraved on every gold piece sold in Egypt. It guarantees the piece was tested and matches the stated karat.
Hallmark Components
- Karat number: 24, 21, 18, or 14
- Shape symbol: Each karat has a distinctive shape
- Manufacturer code: Letters/numbers identifying the maker
- Government stamp: Official Assay Office mark
How to Read the Hallmark
- Use a magnifying loupe — hallmarks are very small
- Look for the karat number (21, 18, 24)
- Verify the engraving is clear and uniform — fake hallmarks are blurry
Signs of Fake Gold
- No hallmark — the most critical red flag
- Blurry or unclear hallmark
- Color changes over time (real gold doesn't)
- Leaves green marks on skin
- Lighter than expected (gold is naturally heavy)
- Attracted to magnets (real gold is not magnetic)
Additional Testing Methods
- Acid test: Goldsmith rubs piece on touchstone and applies acid
- XRF machine: Electronic test — precise karat reading. Available at major shops.
- Density test: Weighing in air vs water confirms gold density
